How to reduce each composite product selection offered to a single variable from each variable product.

While creating new composite product, I need each specific product option to be limited to a specific variable. Currently each component allows me to select a product or multiple products, but I am not able to select which variable of that product should be offered. Instead the default is allowing the options to include all variables of all selected products. I only want to offer one variable for each product selected. How can I change this setting? As example, if the composite product was a keyboard and mouse bundle in matching colors, and the composite bundle is "red", then I want to offer different keyboard and mouse products, but only allow the "red" variable of each product to be selectable.
